In 1976, Gunter Shell became the first African-American head coach at Travelers Rest when she was chosen to lead the volleyball program. She received her undergraduate degree from South Carolina State and her master’s degree from Furman University. She’s a graduate of Mims High School in McCormick, where she excelled in basketball, volleyball and track. She also taught and coached at Ebenezer Middle School in Sumter, Northwood Middle School and Southside High School.
